Dr. William Chien is a Christian. A native of Taipei, Taiwan, saxophonist Dr. William Chien is a soloist, chamber musician and educator. He has performed throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. Dr. Chien holds the degree of Doctor of Music from the University of North Texas, major in saxophone performance and related field in jazz study. He also holds a Master of Music degree in Saxophone Performance from Boston Conservatory and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Christ College in Taipei. Dr. Chien has previously served on the faculty as Assistant Professor of Saxophone at Taiwan National Tainan University, National Sun Yat-sen University, Taipei Fu-Jen Catholic University, Taipei Christ’s College, Kuang Jen High School and Taipei Hwa Kang Art School. He has been awarded the position of Teaching Fellow at the University of North Texas from 2010-2013. Since 2018, Dr. Chien directs saxophone ensemble and teaches lessons at Southwestern Adventist University in Keene, Texas, U.S.A. He also maintains a large saxophone studio in DFW areas, his students regularly achieve positions in All-State, All-Region and All-District bands.
As a performer, Dr. Chien has premiered works and gave concerts around the world, including featured concerto soloist with the Kaohsiung Citizens Band(2016), performances at World Saxophone Congress in Strasbourg, France (2015) and St. Andrew, Scotland(2012), North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conferences in Illinois (2014) and Georgia (2010), Taiwan National Recital Concert Hall in Taipei (2013), Navy International Saxophone Symposium in Virginia (2011) and OCC Music Center. (Japan 2009) Dr. Chien is the member of the WWCP (World-Wide Concurrent Premieres & Commissioning Fund), commissioned and premiered the music by composers such as Gunther Schuller, John Harbison and Larry Bell. In 2005, Dr. Chien won the first prize in Taiwan national saxophone competition. After competition, Dr. Chien was invited and performed the saxophone concertino by Jacques Ibert in Chiayi city International Band Festival. During his time in Boston, he regularly performed with New England Conservatory Saxophone Ensemble, Saxophone Quartet, Boston Conservatory Wind Ensemble, Orchestra and Musical theater band. During his time in Texas, Dr. Chien performed and recorded with University of North Texas Symphonic Band.
Dr. Chien is also an active jazz perfomer. He perfomed in many different venues such as Taipei Blue Note and FRANZ & FRIENDS in Taipei. He was also invited to perfom in the Taichung Jazz Festival in 2007 and 2008. Between 2009 to 2011,he regularly perfoms with University of North Texas Jazz Lab Band in Denton Jazz Festival. In 2017, Dr. Chien with his jazz band "Gospel Messengers" were invited to perform at KK Jazz Festival, in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia.
As a music educator, Dr. Chien has served as a committee member in the First Asian Saxophone Congress, and was invited to be the judge for the jazz competition of the congress. He was also assisted other important events such as Taiwan International Saxophone Summer Camp and Taipei International Jazz Camp. From 2005 to 2009, Dr. Chien was the founder of Taipei Saxophone Lecture Series and cooperated with other musicians, gave numerous lectures and clinics in different universities and colleges in Taipei. In 2019, he was invited as a guest artist to Sichuan Conservatory Of Music and Xianyang Normal University, held a masterclass and clinic. In the same year, Dr. Chien was invited to China Inner Mongolia Youth Orchestra Music Festival, and gave a recital with Saxophonist Tong Yang (Saxophone professor in China Central Conservatory of Music).
Dr. Chien is the author of “Saxophone Learning for Novices” and “Saxophone Altissimo”, published by Mercury Publishing House. Dr. Chien is an endorsing artist for Yanagisawa Saxophone and Legere Reeds.
